Aglaja Ray
Aglaja Ray (Egle Tamulyte, b. 1988, Sakiai, Lithuania) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work moves between painting, illustration, installation, comics, and speculative visual storytelling. She graduated with a BA in Graphics (Illustration) from Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2012 and completed her MA there in 2020.
Her early creative life (2007–2019) unfolded in the underground art scene, where she was known as Shaltmira. She produced DIY zines, alternative comics, and black-and-white illustrations for music collectives across Europe, establishing a strong cult-like following. This period shaped her graphic, narrative-driven sensibility and her interest in unconventional forms of mythmaking.
From 2019 to 2025, her work expanded into theology, artificial intelligence, and the posthuman condition. Through murals, performances, and immersive installations—often using UV-reactive materials—she fused biblical references with science fiction, spiritual texts, and cyborg iconography. Her imagery explored resurrection, transcendence, and the fragility of the human body in an age defined by technological acceleration. Metaphorical beings and speculative figures questioned how belief systems, mortality, and emerging technologies shape human identity.
Her current direction marks a contemplative turn. The ongoing painting series REST focuses on rest, overstimulation, and emotional healing. Using acrylics, spray paint, and layered, intuitive mark-making, she depicts reclining figures and botanical motifs inspired by her mother’s garden, poetry, and dream states. These works hold space for slowness and sensory attention, proposing rest as a form of resistance and reconnection in an overactive world.
Throughout her practice, Aglaja treats art as a tool for inquiry rather than a fixed outcome—a means to explore existence, inner life, relationships, technology, and the metaphysical. She often leaves narrative gaps for viewers to complete, encouraging personal interpretation. Her work has been recognised in Lithuania and internationally, and continues to evolve at the intersection of spirituality, abstraction, and speculative imagination.
