Maximilian Vermilye (b. 1993), also known by the pseudonym Max PhV, is a Swiss-based artist whose work explores a conceptual approach to digital imagery, which he describes as psychodynamic photography. Vermilye's background in liberal arts, including a Bachelor's Degree in Photography from Webster University, blends with his expertise across other creative fields, giving him a distinct perspective on color, beauty, and the transformation of moments. In addition to his digital art practice, Vermilye is a certified stylist with qualifications in General Styling from the London College of Style (2015) and Men’s Styling from Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design (2017).
Vermilye's passion for photography extends into a conceptual exploration of mobile creativity. Inspired by the ubiquity of digital cameras and the often overlooked potential of smartphones as artistic tools, Vermilye centers his practice on using his smartphone to capture and transform everyday scenes into visual artistry. He defines this process as psychodynamic photography, a pioneering concept where images are modulated and transformed using mobile editing software. The entire creation process occurs on the phone, making the artwork an "inbuilt" feature of the device itself. His techniques—such as flipping, formal symmetry, and repetition of forms—often evoke fractals and fantastical figures, challenging conventional perceptions of reality.
In psychodynamic photography, the process involves capturing, modulating, and transforming images to construct new meanings. Vermilye aims to create a personal connection between the photographer, the image, and the viewer, encouraging each observer to engage with the artwork individually, interpreting it through their emotions. This interaction renders each piece multilateral, communicating subconscious elements in a deeply personal language.
His work is characterized by Surrealist compositions infused with geometric abstraction, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on layered realities through repetitive forms, shapes, and patterns. Vermilye’s art has been showcased in joint exhibitions across Geneva, London, Seoul, and New York. In 2023, he exhibited in the Metaverse, collaborating with the VoiceHQ NFT marketplace. His photography was recognised as one of the top 20 images in Switzerland during the Swiss Photo Club 2021 exhibition. Vermilye also engages in live performances, presenting his dynamic digital art alongside musical acts, with his work featured in Artistcloseup Contemporary Art Magazine's April 2023 issue.
