Sarah Park
Born in Sydney in 1984, Sarah Park is an accomplished contemporary realist painter whose work explores the emotional resonance of everyday moments. Her practice is defined by meticulous attention to light, shadow and texture, combining deep contrasts with soft transitional tones to create a quiet yet powerful sense of presence. Through both brush and lens, she composes scenes with cinematic intention, allowing subtle gestures and shifts in atmosphere to reveal transformative stories about her subjects.
Sarah holds a Bachelor's, a Master of Arts by Coursework, and a Master of Fine Arts by Research from UNSW College of Fine Arts. This academic foundation, grounded in rigorous technical training and conceptual development, underpins her approach to contemporary realism. Her commitment to nuance and precision has earned her significant recognition, including the 2011 Jenny Birt Award for Painting and Drawing and the UNSW Engineering Photography Prize. She has also been a finalist in a wide range of respected competitions, including the Lethbridge 10,000, Kennedy Art Prize, Georges River Art Prize, Whitewall Art Prize, Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, Fisher’s Ghost Award and the Broken Hill Art Prize.
Her inclusion in the “Discovery” section of Artist Profile magazine (Issue 21, 2012) highlighted her early promise and the conceptual clarity already evident in her work. Over the years, Sarah has continued to refine a visual language rooted in careful observation, emotional sensitivity and a fascination with detail. Whether it’s the delicate interplay of light across skin, the textures of natural forms or the fleeting gestures of the human figure, she brings a sense of intimacy and wonder to the overlooked and the ordinary.
At the heart of her practice is a deep curiosity about the human experience. Contemporary realism, for Sarah, is not simply a technique—it’s a way of slowing down, paying attention and elevating small details into moments of meaning. Her paintings encourage viewers to pause, look more closely, and enter a world where the beauty of the everyday is revealed with remarkable clarity and tenderness.
